Andropogon gerardii 'Blackhawks' PP #27,949
A dramatic vertical accent that changes color throughout the growing season. Foliage emerges green, then develops red-bronze hues towards the tips in summer. The color continues to darken to deep purple until almost black in fall. Purple plumes appear in late summer. Quickly reaches 2 ft. wide, plumes 4 to 8 ft tall.
Easily grown in average, well-drained soils, but tolerant of a wide range of soil conditions. Puts out more growth, and grows taller, in moist, fertile soils. Slow to establish, but then tolerates drought. Cut stems to the ground in late winter before new shoots appear.
